Do I need dance experience?

We have a course for every level of dancer. From ‘never danced before’ to ‘seasoned Salsa aficionado’. Our free ‘New York Salsa Basics Class' and '5 Week Starter Course' are both perfect options if you haven’t danced before or are new to NY Salsa. Learning to dance Salsa for the first time is a fun and often transformative experience for many people.

What is New York Salsa?

New York Style Salsa is a linear form of Salsa dancing characterised by its emphasis on musical interpretation and graceful movements. It is performed "on 2," meaning the steps align with the second beat of the musical measure, creating a unique, smooth, and fluid rhythm. This dance style follows a linear structure, with dancers moving back and forth along a designated "slot" or line of dance. The cross-body lead serves as the fundamental movement, allowing partners to exchange places seamlessly.

Do I need to bring a dance partner?

No partner? No problem! Our classes include partner rotations, helping you adapt to dancing with various partners, just like in social settings. Of course, you're welcome to bring a friend or partner if you'd like!

How do I book classes?

You can book a course on our website here. Once you have registered, just show up for the first class of the course and you’re ready to dance.

What to wear to class?

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for aerobic exercise to keep up with the energy of Salsa. Feel free to choose what works best for you!

What to bring to class?

All that we recommend you bring to class is a drink bottle and we will do the rest!

Parking?

Both of our locations at Milton and at Holland Park have free onsite parking and additional free on street parking right next to our venues. You should find parking easily and will not have to worry about paying for parking. Refer to our ‘locations’ section of our website for more detail.

What is meant by ‘Leader’ and ‘Follower’?

When partner dancing, one person fulfils the 'Leader' role and the other person, the 'Follower' role. ‘Leader’ is the terminology for the traditional masculine role in the dance and, historically was a male. ‘Follower’ is the terminology for the traditional feminine role in the dance and, historically was a female. Today, anyone can fill either role.

Can I join a Course that has already commenced?

At LocoMojo, our courses start on set dates and follow a structured, purpose-driven format. To provide the best experience for all dancers, we kindly ask that you select a course with a start date that works for you, as mid-course joiners are not permitted. With all courses running for 5 weeks (other than our 10 Week Advanced Courses), your next chance to start a course is always right around the corner!

Can I book and pay for a class at the door?

We recommend purchasing your course on our website, given our set schedule and start dates. However, you can buy a course at the door during Week 1 of a course provided there are still spots available.

What if I buy a course but don’t meet the competency requirements?

Don't worry, our Starter level courses have no competency requirements!

Beyond the Starter level, to ensure every student thrives, certain courses have specific competency requirements that must be met for a dancer to participate. This approach ensures you’re placed in the right class for your skill level, creates an optimal learning environment for all students, and maintains the integrity and high standards of our courses. Each course includes a competency requirements section that you can view on our website.

If you purchase a course but do not meet the competency required, you can redeem your course fee for another course. We do not offer refunds for our courses. To avoid any disappointment, please read the ‘competency requirement’ section for the course you are looking to purchase. If you have any queries or are unsure if you will meet the requirements of a course please contact us via email or talk with one of our instructors.
